EU Strengthens Contacts with Nagorno Karabakh

EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Peter Semneby, who is on a regional visit in Armenia, held a meeting with the Nagorno Karabakh President Arkady Ghukasian December 17.

Upon completion of the meeting the European diplomat said that the EU-NKR relations were discussed. In his words, the EU is aspired to strengthen contacts with Nagorno Karabakh and demonstrate a more active approach that will also promote the conflict resolution.

He informed that the EU keeps in touch with all the sides in the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. "It will be much harder to settle the conflict without support of the international community and contacts with the conflicting sides and their publics," Peter Semneby considers.

When asked whether it's true that he intended to pay a call on Karabakh but cancelled the visit over the constitutional referendum Semneby said he really wanted to visit Karabakh but did not do it on a number of reasons. "One of the reasons is that my visit during the period of referendum could be interpreted in various ways. But it does not mean that I will not visit Karabakh. I am going to do that soon," he remarked adding that contacts with the Karabakhi side as well as with the other conflicting parties are essential for the EU.
