The low cost reflective layer, made from thin silver alloy, was developed by TTC and is being used in optical discs, including DVDs. The layer is for disc protection. TTC applied for patent on the alloy in 2004, and the patent was granted in 2006.
The reflective layer is used by lots of other vendors, but the suit indicates only Sony for patent infringement.
This suit is making a very risky situation for Sony. Blu-ray discs and high definition DVDs were released simultaneously in 2006 and they are really hot competitors. They were both hacking each others disc copy protections to show their superiority and win the market.
So if the suit make troubles for Sony to stop Blu-ray disc production, to recall the sold products, or to delay the production in order to develop new copy protection method, it will definitely open the way the high definition DVDs.
