Mahmoud Abbas, Ehud Olmert to Meet Next Week

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says he plans to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert next week. Mr. Abbas did not say where the two plan to hold talks, set for Thursday, June 7.

They agreed in March to meet every two weeks, as part of a U.S.- backed deal to continue dialogue despite ongoing violence.

Meanwhile, Mr. Olmert says he plans to address residents of the Gaza Strip in next few days. He plans to tell them they are victims of a small number of fanatics who are instigating rocket attacks against southern Israel.

Israel has been carrying out an air campaign against militants firing the rockets for more than a week. Tuesday, Israeli troops launched a cross-border raid into Gaza, killing two Hamas militants.

In the West Bank, the Israeli army said it arrested four wanted men in an overnight raid in a refugee camp.

Palestinians say the detainees include a member of the Palestinian parliament and all are members of the Fatah faction led by Mr. Abbas.

Nearly 50 Palestinians - mostly militants - have been killed in Israeli airstrikes. Palestinian rockets have killed two Israelis since May 15. - VOA News
