T-Mobile wins "connect" magazine's HSDPA measurement test

T-Mobile offers its customers the best HSDPA network in Germany. This is the clear result of a broad-based test conducted by the magazine "connect," the leading technical journal on telecommunications, which recently took a close look at the performance of mobile broadband networks in Germany.

The conclusion could not have been clearer: "Anyone who wants maximum speed and maximum coverage should sign up with T-Mobile" (connect, no. 6/2007, p. 17).

"The excellent quality of our mobile network is a major advantage for our customers which clearly sets T-Mobile apart from its competitors", says Günther Ottendorfer, Managing Director at T-Mobile Deutschland. "We will resolutely continue to pursue our strategy of providing an efficient platform for broadband-quality mobile phone calls and mobile data communications".

According to connect, T-Mobile not only came out top of the table with an average data-transmission speed of well over 1.6 megabits per second (Mbit/s), it also led the field when it came to connection stability (99.83 percent) and dial-up times for data connections (3.5 seconds). T-Mobile also provides customers the best broadband service in rural regions, according to connect. This is due to the great progress that has been made in installing EDGE technology.

Objective measurement test
Describing the advantages of HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access), the journalists at connect write that the technology supports "high-speed airborne data transmission, giving the customer a significant value-added advantage. Mobile surfing, downloads and mail traffic now function at the speed you're used to from your DSL connection." In the overall result of connect's test, T-Mobile - with 93 points out of a possible 100 and a rating of "very good" - is the test winner ahead of Vodafone. O2 follows in third place. connect measured HSDPA quality in cooperation with the Aachen-based testing company P3 Solutions. The results are based on several thousand data downloads from the Internet using original HSDPA data cards. The test technicians built up the fast data connections at approx. 30 measurement point in regions where the mobile broadband network is already installed. In the quality checks, the technicians simulated HSDPA connections inside buildings.

Comprehensive broadband strategy
The result of connect's test is a clear confirmation of T-Mobile comprehensive quality and broadband strategy. Germany's leading mobile communications provider offers HSDPA with bandwidths of up to 3.6 Mbit/s throughout the entire UMTS network. In the course of the year, T-Mobile will begin doubling HSDPA bandwidth to 7.2 Mbit/s, achieving HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) data rates of up to 1.4 Mbit/s.

EDGE and W-LAN are further key elements of the mobile market leader's broadband strategy, alongside HSDPA. EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) offers transmission speeds up to four times those of ISDN. By the end of the year, T-Mobile will be the only mobile provider making broadband EDGE technology available practically Germany-wide. This means that users will also have broadband data access in areas not covered by HSDPA.

T-Mobile's HotSpot service is the biggest public W-LAN network in the world. HotSpots give users online access at speeds of up to 11 Mbit/s via their laptop or PDA. This means that HotSpot is currently giving users the fastest wireless Internet access in the company's broadband portfolio.
T-Mobile and T-Com operate over 8,600 HotSpots in Germany and more than 40,000 worldwide in cooperation with roaming partners. In Germany, the service is also available as part of exclusive partnerships in Deutsche Bahn railway lounges and specially equipped high-speed trains. Furthermore, air passengers find Deutsche Telekom HotSpots in Lufthansa lounges all over the world.

T-Mobile's highly developed mobile communications network enables the company to offer its customers innovative mobile services for consumers and business customers - including, for example, mobile communication via email and mobile Internet access via web'n'walk. -http://www.t-mobile.net
