WHO has declared the theme for 2007 as "smoke-free environment" and Mumbai has organised several events, including officials and local bodies to mark the day.
The city's police force launched a "Tobacco-Free Police stations" initiative today aimed at keeping police stations free of tobacco and personnel off-smoking.
The initiative targets sensitising 40,000-strong force on harmful effects of tobacco by placing anti-tobacco posters in police stations, holding de-addiction programmes, educational workshops and seminars in all 13 police zones.
The campaign undertaken in association with NGO Salaam Bombay Foundation, began with 28 constables and eight sub-inspectors taking an oath "to keep their surroundings tobacco free".
Leading radio channels have also pledged to air special programmes featuring cinestars and local people, along with health experts.
Radio Mirchi said it has begun a week-long campaign from today, which will include film stars, Manoj Bajpai (who quit smoking after 22 years), Shah Rukh Khan and others.
Radio 92.7 FM too has joined the bandwagon.- DDNews India
