WHO condemns passive smoking 'untruths'

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has condemned what it calls tobacco industry untruths about smoking in public places.

In a statement to mark World Tobacco Day, the WHO said the industry had repeatedly and deliberately misinformed the public about the risks from passive smoking.

The head of the WHO's anti-tobacco campaign, Doctor Ermando Perugia, has called on world leaders to ban smoking in all indoor and public places.

"The scientific evidence is now indisputable - second hand smoke kills," he said.

"There's no safe level of exposure, and the conclusion is clear - smoking cannot be allowed inside." SOURCE: © 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
