According to figures released by the League of American Theatres and Producers yesterday, Broadway theatres sold 12.3 million tickets during the 2006-2007 season ending on May 27, up some 2.6 per cent from last season.
Box office receipts were meanwhile up 8.9 from the previous season at $US939 million, with strong tourist numbers driving the record figures.
"We are fortunate that this season was marked by sensational new musicals and plays, offering audiences a diversity of shows to enjoy," Charlotte St Martin, the league's executive director, said in a statement.
Broadway was badly hit by the 2001 attacks on New York and Washington, when a slump in tourist numbers saw audiences severely depleted, producers lose millions of dollars and several shows forced to close. SOURCE: © 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
