Facts you need to know about reproductive health

Like most women, you pass along important health tips to your family and friends. That's why the FDA's Office of Women's Health and the Federal Citizen Information Center have put together the free Reproductive Health Kit for you. It features valuable information on sexually transmitted diseases that every woman can use and share with her loved ones.

Whether you're 16 or 60, a healthy lifestyle involves keeping track of your health care and having timely checkups, tests, and inoculations. One of the most important annual exams for women is the Pap smear. This test checks for cell changes in your cervix caused by sexually transmitted diseases such as HPV (human papillomavirus). When done regularly, a Pap smear can find the cell changes early enough for treatment before the cells turn cancerous.

You can learn more about the risk of getting HPV and how the new vaccine, Gardasil, works in the Reproductive Health Kit. This kit also features important information on HIV-the sexually transmitted virus that attacks your immune system and causes AIDS. Although all women can contract this virus, an increasing number of African American and Latino women have HIV. Get the facts on HIV, how to get tested, and what you can do to prevent HIV and AIDS.

If you're HIV positive, there are medicines available to help keep the virus from building up in your body. Find out about the different types of medicines, including common side effects and risks in the Reproductive Health Kit. There's also a list of questions you should ask your healthcare professional about the drugs you need and a sample medication schedule to make taking them easier.- U.S. FCIC
