United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today spoke out against a recent verbal attack on Israel by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who repeatedly said that the world could soon witness the "destruction of the Zionist regime."Â
The Secretary-General was "shocked and dismayed"Â by the 3 June comments, his spokesperson said in a statement, pointing out that "the State of Israel is a full and long-standing member of the United Nations with the same rights and obligations as every other member."Â
Mr. Ban recalled that under the UN Charter, "all members have undertaken to refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any State."Â
