Palestinian Factional Fights Continue in Gaza

Fighting has erupted between rival Palestinian forces in the Gaza Strip, testing a two-day ceasefire. Robert Berger reports from the VOA bureau in Jerusalem.

Gunmen from the ruling Islamic militant group Hamas and the rival Fatah faction fought fierce battles in several parts of Gaza City. Clashes erupted at a hospital and at a key security agency controlled by moderate Palestinian President and Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas.

The fighting tested a shaky ceasefire aimed at halting a week of unrest that has raised fears of a Palestinian civil war. Gun battles escalated Saturday after Mr. Abbas called early elections in a bid to topple the Hamas-led government. Hamas called it a coup d'état and vowed that the elections will not take place.

Neither side is backing down.
