
A suspected suicide bomber blew himself dead and injured 31 others outside a Nairobi hotel today morning along Moi Avenue at about 8 am.
The security personel who arrived at the scene moments after the blast, confirmed one person was killed and 31 others had been admitted in various hospitals in the city.
A loud bang outside the busy street shook the city as people scampered for safety while others lay on their bellies for cover. The explosion was heard within four-kilometre radius.
Personal items and papers were strewn all over and some dismembered body parts scattered near the scene.
By 10 am, 23 casualties who were treated of minor injuries had already been discharged.
"There are two patients who have also been taken to the minor theatre while the rest of the casualties are receiving treatment at the emergency wing," Health minister Charity Ngilu said.
Thorough investigations, which involved military officials, were underway as at the time of going to press.
A busdriver said the two men attempted to enter the bus heading for Jomo Kenyatta International Airport but were turned away as it was full.It was immediately after they walked away that the loud bang was heard.
Among the seriously injured was a female bus conductor.
Police sources said the two men arrived in a taxi and alighted near Ambassador hotel before they attempted to board the bus.
GSU officers were called to secure the site as crowds milled around.
