Sir Salman Rushdie Given Knighthood By Queen

Author Salman Rushdie has received a knighthood in the latest Birthday honours list in the United Kingdom.

Salman Rushdie is one of the world's most well known writers. He gained fame not only for the quality of his writing but for the controversy provoked by publication of his novel The Satanic Verses

"Outraged Muslims around the world who were infuriated by what they believed to be insults to their religion. The book was banned in a dozen countries and caused demonstrations and riots "¦ during which a number of people were killed or injured. Charging Rushdie with blasphemy, Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini proclaimed that the author and his publisher should be executed "¦ This fatwa, or death sentence, was reaffirmed by the Iranian government as late as 1993; three people involved with the book's publication were subsequently attacked and one, Rushdie's Japanese translator, was fatally injured.
