Nigeria: Asari Dokubo Denounces Kidnappings in the Niger Delta

Asari Dokubo, leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF) has denounced kidnapping of foreign oil workers in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. He said that such violence "was not part of the struggle for the development of the oil producing areas but mere criminal act."

"We will try and work to stop this act of criminality and banditry. We are not going to be something that we are not; we are fighting injustice, we should not do injustice to other people. We are fighting for justice so we can't be seen to be doing injustice to other people," Asari Dokubo said to the thousands of well wishers who thronged the Air Force Base in the oil city Port Harcourt last Saturday, June 16, 2007, to welcome him after his release from detention.

He called for an end to the rampant criminal acts of kidnappings and vandalism in the Niger Delta.

Asari Dokubo reiterated his call for the convocation of a Sovereign National Conference on Nigeria to resolve all the conflicts of interests in the federation.

On the same day, Niger Delta militants released seven Indian expartriate workers of the Indorama oil service company, who were kidnapped on June 1.
