Barnabas Kelemen Featured in Indianapolis Violin Competition

The stage becomes electric when 2002 IVCI Gold Medalist Barnabás Kelemen and his wife Katalin Kokas, an award-winning violinist and violist, perform. The April 16th program features duo works for two violins or violin and viola from the Baroque to the twentieth century including duos by Leclair, Mozart and Bartók. Mr. Kelemen will also play Bach's D minor Partita for Solo Violin which is known for the famous Chaconne.

The International Violin Competition of Indianapolis (IVCI) will present the next concert, Hungarian Rhapsody" on Thursday, April 16 at 7:30 PM at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church located at 6050 N. Meridian Street. This series features prizewinners from the past seven competitions and special guests in recitals and in collaboration with some of Indianapolis’ finest arts organizations bringing the excitement of the quadrennial Competition back to Indiana on a regular basis.

Barnabas Kelemen has performed in Indianapolis on several occasions since his win at the 2002 Competition, but never before with his wife and duo partner. The Indianapolis concert is one of three performances they will be giving while on this US tour. The other concerts will be in Columbus, Indiana, where they will perform as soloists with the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, and in Dallas, Texas, where they are featured on the Chamber Music International concert series. During the tour they will also be doing some teaching in a master class format.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
2002 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis Gold Medalist Barnabás Kelemen has established himself as one of the leading violinists of his generation, appearing regularly as a concerto soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician at many of the world's major musical venues and festivals. He has toured extensively throughout Europe, North and South America, South Africa, Japan and Taiwan. In recognition of his talent and achievements, Kelemen received several prestigious awards from the Hungarian Government in addition to musical awards such as Classical Musician of the Year by Gramophone magazine (Hungary), France’s Diapaison d’Or for his Brahms Sonatas recording, and the International Liszt Society’s 2001 Grand Prix du Disque for his double CD, The Complete Works for Violin and Piano by Franz Liszt.

Equally adept at the violin and the viola, Katalin Kokas won first prizes at the 1999 Carl Flesch International Violin Competition, the 2002 Joseph Szigeti International Violin Competition, and the 1994 International Violin Competition in the Czech Republic. She has performed at important concert venues throughout Europe, South Africa and the US including Paris’ Louvre Auditorium and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City. She has also participated in the music festivals at Lockenhaus, Jerusalem, Delft, Prussia-Cove, Seville, and the Budapest Spring Festival.

Barnabás and Katalin met each other as students at the Liszt Academy and have been friends since age 11. They are not only companions in life but musically as well, inspiring each other and performing regularly together. Both are currently on the faculty of the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Hungary, and Barnabás teaches regularly as a guest at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. The duo has also released several recordings as a duo both on CD and on High Definition DVD.
