Suicide Car Bombing in Baghdad Kills 11

Iraqi officials say a suicide car bomber rammed his vehicle into a police checkpoint in Baghdad, killing at least 11 people and wounding about 30 others.

Police say the attack took place Wednesday in the Jadriya district of Baghdad and that the victims included both police and civilians.

Separately, the U.S. military announced the capture of a senior al-Qaida terrorist leader, who the military said, was responsible for hundreds of civilian deaths and housing foreign fighters who carried out suicide attacks. A statement issued Wednesday said the man, whose identity was not disclosed, was arrested in a raid in Mosul on December 14.

On Tuesday, Iraqi police found 53 bodies around the capital, many showing signs of torture.

Separately, gunmen stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from a bank - the second such robbery in Baghdad this month.

Also on Tuesday, Iraqi authorities executed 13 men convicted of murder and other crimes. Video footage showed the hooded men standing in a row before they were hanged.

And in the genocide trial of Saddam Hussein, prosecutors showed the Iraqi court graphic video of dead women and children, and Kurdish villagers fleeing a chemical attack.

Saddam and six co-defendants are charged with crimes against humanity for their roles in a military operation in the Kurdish region northern Iraq in the 1980's. Prosecutors say 180,000 Kurds were killed in the operation.
