It's official. The Detroit Pistons have traded Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess for Denver Nuggets forward Allen Iverson.
Although it was in the wind, and many fans suspected a trade was inevitable, no one figured Chauncey “Mr. Big Shot” Billups to be traded. Billups was also the team captain and union representative. Billups' stats for 2007-2008 were 17.1 points per game and 6.8 assists. The point guard was a fan favorite in Detroit.
Antonio McDyess on the other hand, was always questionable. Even though McDyess always played with plenty of passion and tenacity, that didn't always turn into points on the board. McDyess closed out the 2007 season with 8.8 points per game and 1.1 assists. McDyess came to the Detroit Pistons in 2004.
Billups is credited with guiding the Pistons to the Eastern Conference finals during each of his previous six seasons in Detroit. His formative years were spent in Denver and Billups played 58 games for the Denver Nuggets for a little over two seasons during 1998-2000.
McDyess has also played for the Nuggets, he began his NBA career with them in 1995.
Allen Iverson was traded to Denver in December 2006, but hasn't been able to help Carmelo Anthony get the Nuggets past the first round of the playoffs in his two seasons there.
The trade gives the Pistons salary-cap flexibility at the end of the season. Iverson’s contract, which pays him $21.9 million this season, expires in July.
Billups is owed $36.3 million over the next three seasons and has an additional $14.2 million team option for 2011-12. McDyess will make $6.8 million each of the next two seasons.
