iPhone Killer: Nokia E71

They're saying it's the iPhone killer, that it lets you toggle your personal life. Retailing at $475 USD, the Nokia E71 looks more like a Blackberry killer.

The smart phone that wants to be the heir apparent to both the Blackberry and the iPhone, may give only the iPhone a run for its money. Here's why:

It has a decent 3.2 mega pixel camera, a nice trim profile (10mm vs. 12.3mm on the iPhone); and the fact that no major carrier has picked it up yet. That leaves room for pending open network that Verizon Wireless has been promising since the beginning of the year.

With the Nokia E71 Quick Office program, you can edit and send Word/Excel/Power Point files with the quickness while allowing you to browse PDF files using Adobe Acrobat Reader. This killer to the iPhone has made great strides from most smart phones' humble beginnings.

The E71 allows for two separate customizable home screens. One is geared toward your work applications like Excel and Word, while the other screen leans toward all your entertainment and gaming programs. Simply go to the dedicated button at the top of the menu to toggle between the two screens in an instant.

The 2.36 inch 320 x 240 QVGA display is a little smaller than the classic iPod, here is where the iPhone beats out the E71 in resolution. Nokia E71 fights back with enough frames per second (fps) to submit to You Tube at 15fps. The battery life on this smart phone has three full days.

Here are some more plusses and minuses for the Nokia E71 iPhone killer:

PLUSSES: 8GB on board memory, external microSD slot, GPS, 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, predictive text, vivid screen in direct sunlight, and lightweight

MINUSES: Doesn't have the standard 3.5mm headphone jack, N-Gage gaming platform isn't available, you may miss out on some of the movie because the screen isn't wide enough.

THE VERDICT: It's no iPhone killer, but if you are just getting into smart phones and want an unlocked phone that everybody else doesn't have, then the Nokia E71 is the one for you.
