It is unclear whether New York Giants receiver Plaxico Burress shot himself last night or what. But one thing is clear; he won’t be playing in Sunday’s game.

Just to bring you up to speed, Plaxico Burress is the Giants’ all star wide receiver who has had his share of controversies. Usually they result in suspensions or fines; he has been fined so many times that Burress has forgotten himself. Several web sites are reporting that Burress shot himself, each citing unnamed sources. Fox Sports.com reported that Burress spent the night in the hospital yet the injury was not life-threatening.

Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports reported that the bullet “grazed” Burress’ leg and that the injury would probably keep him off the playing field for two weeks. Also, no one, not even the Giants would confirm where Burress was when the incident occurred. No police reports have been located concerning the shooting.

The New York Giants are traveling to Washington to play the Redskins on Sunday. Burress had already been sidelined for a hamstring pull and wasn’t going to play in that contest anyway. Burress didn’t practice with the team this week because he aggravated the hamstring pull against Arizona.

Plaxico Burress recently signed a five-year $35 million contract with the Giants just before the season began. He served a 12 day suspension because he missed team meetings without explanation.

On October 19th, Burress yelled at Coach Tom Coughlin while on the sideline after he earned an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty. The NFL fined Burress $45,000 for verbal abuse of an official at that time.

The following week in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Coach Coughlin held Burress out of the first quarter because he did not show for a scheduled treatment for a neck and shoulder injury the day before. Read more about the National Football League games.

The 31-year old Plaxico Burress has shrugged off the importance of his past controversies, and believes his job is about catching passes and nothing more. However, the Giants are not a team known to tolerate players who consistently find themselves in negative situations. Yet, they have been overly patient with Burress. It will be interesting to see what the Giants do with Burress once the season ends.
