Hunt Is On For Kmart Shooter

The estranged boyfriend of a Kmart employee opened fire on her and another co-worker seriously wounding the co-worker in Philadelphia today. The shooter is on the run and considered armed and dangerous.

Around 9:30 (EST) this morning, 30-year old Anthony Birch began arguing with his girlfriend, a Kmart female employee on the north side of Philadelphia. Birch had followed the woman into the store by way of the back loading dock. At some point the argument grew too intense and Birch went for his gun.

Police say that is when Birch pulled out a gun and fired a shot. A male store manager tried to help the woman and was shot three times. One of the bullets grazed his head, other bullets hitting the man in his chest and arm.

"What we believe happened is, at some point, a male manager, an employee of the store, about 35 years old, attempted to intervene," said Lt. Frank Vanor of the Philadelphia Police Department.
Birch’s girlfriend was not hit. No shoppers or other Kmart employees were injured.

Officials reacted quickly when told of the couple’s children. Police placed the youngster’s school on temporary lockdown and removed the children from classes to safety.

Police are still looking for the suspect. He is said to be driving a gold Nissan with a black door. If you have any information leading to the whereabouts of the suspected Kmart shooter call 911.
