In a professionally prepared statement to the press, Chris Brown has released an apology for the events that transpired one week ago between he and a still unnamed female. Through media speculation and a trickle down of leaked information to the press, we all know the woman Chris Brown assaulted was Rihanna.
This story has been woven in secrecy since it happened. And secrecy gives abusers power. As long as an abused woman remains secret about the assault, then it gives the abuser the feeling that again, they have gotten away with something. When no one knows about domestic violence, it only festers and becomes more violent. Rihanna is a perfect example of escalating domestic violence.
According to reports on TMZ, this is not the first time Chris Brown has assaulted Rihanna. From the LAPD police report, Rihanna told them this was not the first time Brown hit her. "She referred to it as an ongoing and escalating abusive relationship."
Here is the statement Chris Brown has released to the media about the assault case against him:
"Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired. I am seeking the counseling of my pastor, my mother and other loved ones and I am committed, with God's help, to emerging a better person. Much of what has been speculated or reported on blogs and/or reported in the media is wrong. While I would like to be able to talk about this more, until the legal issues are resolved, this is all I can say except that I have not written any messages or made any posts to Facebook, on blogs or any place else. Those posts or writing under my name are frauds."
There is still no comment from a Rihanna spokesperson.
One reason the case is taking so long to get to the LA County District Attorney's office is because its weak, sources say. The case against Chris Brown for criminal threats against Rihanna is "kind of thin," a police sources tells TMZ.
However, Brown most likely will be charged with the lesser offense of felony domestic battery. Felony domestic battery is still serious in California, if convicted Chris Brown could face up to four years in prison.
Here is what transpired the night Chris Brown assaulted Rihanna-- (according to the LAPD police reports and TMZ.)
Chris Brown receives a text message from another woman who wants to get together with him while they are driving in Brown's $2,000 a night rented Lamborghini. A heated argument ensues as Brown continues driving.
In the beginning, Rihanna withheld this information from the police. It is during the argument that Chris Brown began hitting Rihanna. According to the police report, at this time she "ordered" Chris to drive her home. During the drive home Rihanna pretended to call someone saying things like "He's dropping me off. Make sure the cops are there."
By mentioning the police, Chris Brown became enraged that Rihanna had called the police on him or was attempting to do so. Brown then threatened Rihanna with words similar to these:
"You are really fu**ed up now. I'm going to kill you." This statement alone was the basis of the original criminal threats charge according to the LAPD.
Rihanna then takes the keys from the ignition and throws them outside. According to sources this is when Chris Brown began beating Rihanna with his fists. As a result of the attack, Rihanna ended up with contusions on her face, a busted and swollen lip, bloody nose, and bite marks on her fingers and arms.
The apology is no doubt an effort by Chris Brown to begin to mend the fences with fans, media and his corporate sponsors. His entire career is in jeopardy and I'm not sure if saying he's sorry will do it.
