Today is The National Day of Prayer, a day when people are asked to come together and pray, especially for their country. And with the current situation in the world right now, prayer is very much needed.

Established as a floating holiday in 1952, later fixed on the first Thursday in May by then president Ronald Reagan, The National Day of Prayer has actually been designated by the United States Congress as an official day of prayer.

Prayer seems to be the only thing that is going to turn the world around. Daily there are fathers killing their own families, students going into schools killing other students, and not to mention wars going on all over the globe. There is no love being shown for fellow man right now and maybe a National Day of Prayer can at least help.

President Obama has stated he will observe The National Day of Prayer silently today and will not host an official event, following the same strategy of former President Bush. National Day of Prayer invites people of all faiths to engage in prayer for their country.

North Carolina Marines at Camp Lejeune will celebrate the National Day of Prayer with an early breakfast as well as hold church services at several chapels on the base. Jason Brinker senior pastor of First Baptist Church Jacksonville, will speak at the Paradise Point Officers' Club. It is said his prayer will concentrate on the country and its leaders as well as the state of the church and military families.

The National Day of Prayer Task Force is run out of the conservative Christian group Focus on the Family based out of Colorado Springs, Colorado. The group had been eagerly awaiting word that the White House would issue a proclamation to host a formal event for the National Day of Prayer.

"President Obama is a committed Christian and believes that we should be engaging Americans of faith in efforts to renew our country," said a White official of White House plans. "He is following the tradition of Presidents Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and others by signing a proclamation honoring the National Day of Prayer, while continuing to work with communities of faith to improve our country."

On this National Day of Prayer it is hoped that all people will become involved, creating a united spiritual bond. Because as everyone knows, there is power in numbers, and the more people who are praying, the more effective the prayer becomes. What are you praying for today?
