Lady Saw - New Album - Walk Out

Lady Saw released her new album, Walk Out, this month, her first album since Strip Tease in 2004. The First Lady of Dancehall has been singing since she was 15, released 8 studio albums to date, and took home a Grammy in 2003 for her contribution to No Doubt’s hit “Underneath It All”.

The first single on the new album by Lady Saw is called “Infertility” and is a response to the ostracization she has received in the Jamaican community for not bearing a child. Her infertility, combined with her competitive career style, has resulted in a reputation of being unfeminine.

In a scene as difficult for a woman to break into as dancehall has proven to be, Lady Saw has had to promote herself by being as rough and crude as the men. This same style has had her banned from venues that warmly welcome the men she rivals. It just goes to show that there is still a lot of sexism and inequality in the music industry, even today.

From what i have heard of the new album so far, it is displaying the softer, more loving side of Lady Saw. This side was always present in her music, ever since she was 15, but it has had to step back at times in order to let her compete in the male dominated dancehall world.

The Lady has reached a point in her career where she can do no wrong by being genuine and singing from her heart, and this album is finally her chance to do just that. For those of you who are already fans of her earlier hit, Sycamore Tree, you will love “Walk Out”. Don’t let me give the wrong impression - that she is all soft and cuddly this time round. If you mess with her man, she will still slice you to pieces, if you don’t keep and eye on your man she will still capture him in her mighty pum pum grip, and if you dishonor the great Queen Of Dancehall, the memory of your existence will be wiped clean from the annals of history! In other words, this album has a little bit for everyone who loves Lady Saw. - Source: Hearing Test Blog
