Video Games Need Innovative Approach

Electronic Art's CEO John Riccitiello said that game industry giants are developing boring games, that more innovation is needed to make games interesting.

What John Riccitiello doesn’t like is that companies offer continuations of old games with some minor changes. Gamers need more brand new titles.

"For the most part, the industry has been rinse-and-repeat. There's been lots of product that looked like last year's product, that looked a lot like the year before," Riccitiello said. "We're boring people to death and making games that are harder and harder to play," he added.

Riccitiello says that game creators need innovative ideas to make ‘casual’ games. He mentioned titles like ‘Guitar Hero’, ‘Rock Band’ and ‘World of Warcraft’ as examples of good games. But he also mentioned that these titles still are not good enough.

Electronic Art itself is a game developer company. It is known with titles like ‘Madden’, ‘Medal of Honor’. The company also has a wide range of continuations to old games.

Despite of Riccitiello innovative ideas Electronic Art’s earning fell by 68% this year.

On the other there are famous and beloved games, such as ‘Need for Speed’ and ‘The Sims’, that don’t need any major changes to attract gamers. Developer companies need very small budget to create a continuation of the game and successfully hit the market.

John Riccitiello’s announcement about ‘boring people to death’ games is very loud, but we don’t still know whether it will change companies’ approach to game making principles. HULIQ
