Intel will join One Laptop per Child effort – a non-profit organization that provides $100 laptops to poor children around the world.
One Laptop per Child currently manufactures XO laptops. Intel designs similar laptops called Classmate PC. The company will still keep providing with Classmate PCs, despite of newly created collaboration.
"Intel joins the OLPC board as a world leader in technology, helping reach the world's children. Collaboration with Intel means that the maximum number of laptops will reach children," said Nicholas Negroponte, founder of One Laptop per Child.
"Joining OLPC is a further example of our commitment to education over the last 20 years and our belief in the role of technology in bringing the opportunities of the 21st century to children around the world," said Intel CEO Paul Otellini.
Joining their efforts, Intel and One Laptop per Child will sell laptops to governmental organizations around the world, and those organizations will aim to give the PCs to poor children for free.
Intel also intends to join One Laptop per Child board.
Currently One Laptop per Child is making computers based on Intel’s main rival Advanced Micro Devices’ chips. AMD also welcomed Intel to join the initiative.
"Intel's apparent change of heart is welcome, and we're sure they can make a positive contribution to this very worthy project for the benefit of children all over the world," said AMD representative. HULIQ
