
Mughal Emperor Shahzhan's Taj White marble marvel is today amongst the top seven wonders of the world which is receiving the world attention and the dynasty's only survivor, Sultan Begum 54 year old Great grand daughter of last Mughal lives in obscurity.
Sultana Begum was the wife of late Mirza Mohd Bedar Bukht, a descendant of Bahadur Shah Zafar and crown queen Zeenat Mehal. Daughter in Law was at her 66 sq ft shabby room at Foreshore Road in slum dwelling units about 10 Km from Kolkata in Distt Howrah.
Sultana Begum said, "Taj Mahal will always remain among the top draws and it doesn't require any fresh voting to validate its standing in the world. When some television channels reported that the monument was slipping out of the race, I was sure it would figure in the list prepared by the New 7 Wonders Foundation,"
"It was one of the happiest moments of my life. I stayed up till late in the night to watch the telecast of the results from Lisbon,
"I wish I could celebrate the occasion with friends, family and neighbors. But I can't celebrate in a way I wish to. It's impossible for me to afford all that with the Rs 400 monthly pension I receive from the central government," Sultana adds.
Her effort to run the tea stall nearby also failed as she gave it on rent to the scrap dealer but that venture too did not met with success. She penned a letter to UPA Chairperson and Congress chief Mrs Sonia Gandhi for higher pension to lead better life. Her requisition is under process.
