Steven Donohue from Tropical Population Health in Townsville, in north Queensland, says the vaccine is oral and must be given at two, four and six months of age.
He says 230 cases of the virus were reported in Townsville last year and even with good hygiene the virus can easily spread.
"I guess any parent today who's had any child covered from head to toe in poo with a very nasty diarrhoea would know what I'm talking about and to have a vaccine that can prevent those episodes, can prevent deaths or hospitalisations with just an oral vaccine I think would be very pleased," he said. © 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
