Portugals Golden Coast a great place to play Golf

When it comes to golf, Portugal has got it all - well maintained golf courses in beautiful locations and the perfect climate to match. So if your dream is to go on a golf holiday in Portugal then you are definitely going to the right place.

Southern Portugal has a large number of championship golf courses. In fact, the South Coast is known as Portugal's "Golden Coast" and for some, the Algarve is synonymous with playing golf in the sunshine all year round.

There are 26 courses in the southern region of Algarve and eighteen in Estremadura and Ribatejo. In the northern regions there are eight golf courses in Beira Alta and the Minho, and one in northern Alentejo, but the cooler climate makes the golfing season shorter.

Portugal's first golf course was founded in 1890 near Espinho, just south of Porto, and that area now has several golf courses.

You will find a good number of courses near the capital city Lisbon, and if you are headed to the Azores and Madeira there are several fine courses on the islands too.

Fees vary widely for Portugal's various golf courses and you should be on the look out for seasonal discounts. Spring and autumn are the peak seasons for golf in Portugal, when it is sunny but not too hot to stay outside for long, where as the winter and summer months tend to be less popular.

Exclusive golf courses such as Pinheiros Altos and Quinta do Lago charge up to €150 for a round of golf, but it is possible to find academy golf courses or courses attached to a holiday resort where fees are still under €50 for a round. Courses reduce their prices to as little as 60 per cent during the off-season.

While Portugal has long been the favoured destination for golf holidays - long weekends away for groups of friends or couples who enjoy a round or three of golf – Portugal has much to offer the longer term visitor – those buying golf holiday homes or those contemplating making the move permanently and wanting to buy a golf property in Portugal.
