
UPA is confident of victory in the presidential elections of India.
A massive 88.5 percent turnout of MPs and 91 percent of MLAs was recorded in the Presidential election in India, with seven states and union territories registering 100 percent polling.
MPs , MLAs from across the country voted for the next President of the country as several UNPA partners took part in voting defying front's call to abstain evenas UPA was confident of a massive victory for Mrs Pratibha Patil.
While 682 MPs out of an effective strength of 770 cast their ballot in Parliament House and state capitals, 3,755 of the 4,120 state legislators exercised their franchise in the election which saw a straight contest between UPA-Left nominee Pratibha Patil and NDA-backed Bhairon Singh Shekhawat.
"Hundred percent turnout of legislators was recorded in Goa, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Rajasthan, Sikkim and Puducherry" said Lok Sabha Secretary General P D T Achary, who is the Returning Officer.
The UPA claimed Ms Patil will romp home with nearly six lakh votes out of the total of over 10.98 lakh votes in the electoral college.
Cracks in the UNPA
Cracks developed in the fledgling UNPA with two of its constituents, AIADMK and MDMK, taking part in the Presidential election , defying the combine's decision to abstain.
Claiming that AIADMK MLAs and MPs particpated in the polling without her knowledge, party Supremo Jayalalithaa, in a statement, blamed the Election Commission for creating "extreme confusion" by issuing a press note on 17th July.
Barring Jayalalithaa and two MDMK MLAs, all other members of the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly voted in today's polling.
AGP MLAs vote defying UNPA decision
15 of 24 AGP MLAs also voted defying UNPA decision to abstain.They were among the 116 MLAs in Assam who voted in the election on Thu.
Five SP MLA vote against party diktat
Voting by five Samajwadi Party MLAs against their party diktat marked presidential elections in Madhya Pradesh where 226 of the 228 legislators exercised their franchise.
Dissident BJP legislators in Gujarat vote for Ms Patil
In an act of open defiance, a group of dissident BJP MLAs in Gujarat voted for UPA-Left candidate Pratibha Patil in the presidential election.
After excercising their franchise at the polling centre in the assembly in Gandhinagar, one of the rebel BJP MLAs, who did not wish to be identified, said about 15 party legislators had voted for Patil as they were unhappy with Chief Minister Narendra Modi's style of functioning.
Heavy polling in West Bengal
Altogether 260 MLAs cast votes in the presidential election even as members of Trinamool Congress (TC) and Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) abstained from voting. Suspended TC MLA Sadhan Pande, however, cast his vote in favour of Ms Patil.
JD-S abstains from voting in Karnataka
A total of 165 MLAs cast their ballots in the presidential election from Karnataka where JD-S, the ruling coalition partner of BJP, abstained from voting. State assembly Speaker, Krishna, cast his vote couple of minutes before the deadline for voting ended at 5 pm.
Senior TDP MLA takes part in election in Andhra Pradesh
Defying his party's decision, senior TDP MLA S V Subba Reddy voted in the poll while Telangana Rashtra Samithi and MIM stayed away from the election which virtually turned out to be a one-sided affair in Andhra Pradesh. The TDP announced that it will abstain from voting. - DDNEWS India
