India's Singh has 'Concerns' About US Nuclear Deal

India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has told President Bush that he has "some concerns" about a new U.S. law approving a bilateral nuclear deal.

A spokesman for Mr. Singh said the two leaders discussed the issue in a telephone call Thursday.

Indian opposition leaders have criticized the U.S. law because it calls on India's government to support U.S. opposition to Iran's nuclear program.

Mr. Singh's spokesman said he hopes the concerns will be addressed in the next round of technical negotiations about the deal.

The Indian leader said many of his concerns about the U.S. law were addressed by President Bush in a statement issued with his approval of the bill.

The deal allows India to access U.S. nuclear technology, in exchange for allowing international inspections at Indian civilian nuclear sites.
