China's Largest Energy Firm to Buy Gas from Turkmenistan

China National Petroleum Corporation has signed a 30-year gas import deal with Turkmenistan on the export of 30 billion cubic metres (1.1 trillion cubic feet) of gas a year to China via a planned Central Asia gas pipeline, according to a CNPC statement late Tuesday, July 17.

“Gas cooperation between China and Turkmenistan is an important part of the cooperation between China and Central Asian countries,” the statement said.

The deal was initially agreed in April.

The CNPC did not say when deliveries would start but Turkmenistan’s official press has said construction of a gas pipeline would begin in 2009.

A similar project was announced in 1998 but construction on the 8,000 kilometres (4,960 miles) pipeline, on a budget of between eight and $11 billion, never got off the ground. -Neftegaz.ru
