NATO Says 50 Taleban Killed in Afghan Offensive

A spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force says NATO and Afghan forces have killed about 50 Taleban insurgents in an operation in southern Afghanistan.

The NATO spokesman said there were no casualties among NATO and Afghan troops. The operation began last week in two districts (Panjwayi and Zhari) of Kandahar province. The spokesman said so far, alliance forces have cleared three villages of Taleban insurgents.

In mid-September, NATO forces carried out another operation in the same area, during which a large number of Taleban were reported killed.

The Taleban are mostly active in southern and eastern parts of Afghanistan, close to the border with Pakistan.

Violence tied to the insurgency has killed at least 4,000 people in 2006.
