Sydney holds key AIDS conference

The world's largest conference on AIDS has begun in Sydney. More than 5,000 HIV experts and community leaders from around the world will review progress on tackling AIDS.

The organisers are urging delegates to sign a declaration calling on governments to spend 10 per cent of all resources dedicated to AIDS on research.

The co-chairman of the Sydney conference, Pedro Kahn, says it is possible to curb the pandemic if there is political will.

"Science has given us the tool to treat and prevent HIV effectively," he said.

"The fact that we have not yet translated this science into practice and that most people in the world who need access to prevention strategies and effective treatment do not have access is a shameful failure on the part of the global community."

Delegates at the four-day meeting will also be presented with a new study showing that male circumcision can reduce the risk of HIV infection in young men by 60 per cent. © 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
