Two men suffocated from exhaust fumes while trying to pump flood water from a rugby club in Gloucestershire in southwest England, local police said Thursday.
The men were using a gasoline-powered pump to clear the club in Tewkesbury of water, which has had no electricity after record rainfall in June and July caused rivers to burst their banks leading to some of the worst flooding for 60 years.
The latest deaths put the number of people who have died in the floods to at least eight, British media reported.
Some 340,000 people in England remain without running water as power stations and sewage systems have been damaged by floods. Health officials warn flood water could contain raw sewage with dangerous viruses and bacteria, including salmonella, and industrial waste.
Although some areas in Britain saw sunshine for the first time in many days Thursday, forecasters predict more rain with possible thunderstorms in the north and west of the country and more flooding. - RIA Novosti
