A modern perception of "community" bears little resemblance to the term as it defined past decades. Modern society has reconsidered community as it relates to technology as illustrated in the "Internet community". Although online communities exhibit a fundamental social gathering through a networking of over a billion, this rendering of the social concept frequently neglects a quality which bonds their members in a close association. The year 2007 is predicted to bring an average American connecting to the internet for the time span of slightly over a week. Although computer innovation has valuably contributed towards bringing the world closer together, ironically it has also prompted an impending neglect for community. Consider modern society, a society which has unintentionally conjured up a unit of measuring advances in technology based on the diminishing size of the Ipod in relation to its increasing complexity of features, and determine how social interactions could become a part of the virtual world. Innovation must exhibit the ability to join a traditional sense of community and the Internet within a contemporary lifestyle; something I like to call Flugpo.com.
Flugpo.com illustrates how advancing societies can maintain a sense of community as they delve into an abyss of interconnected networks. In providing a brief explanation, I quote the website in its accurate reference to Flugpo.com as "Craigslist meets Myspace" which is achieved through the social collaboration of members prior to business interactions. Profiles, groups, and discussions offer the opportunity to communicate on a more personal level. In creating a profile, members can reveal as little information as 'what do you have in your pockets right now' to more intimate details such as 'what is your greatest achievement'. In becoming better acquainted with other members, Flugpo.com establishes a safe, comfortable environment to explore. The site establishes that although anyone can view a listing that has been posted as public, you must have access to the profile of a member if they are interested in doing business. By demonstrating a quality of community co-existing with online technology, Flugpo epitomizes innovation within a contemporary lifestyle.
As a public forum, social network, and business center, Flugpo proposes a reconsideration of the website component referred to as Internet classifieds. The unique classifieds sections features items to buy and sell, job listings, various services, housing, and personals. With a rapidly expanding network channeling a diverse demographic, Flugpo.com stands by the idea of community as a reflection of its members. Through encouraging members offer feedback and become involved in development, Flugpo exhibits how innovation can diverge from the common archetype of a website and create a truly unique Internet resource.
