North Devon Theatres Begins Classical Season

The North Devon Theatres is delighted to announce details of their new classical season, which this year presents some outstanding soloists including one of the world’s leading cellists, Julian Lloyd Webber and internationally renowned pianist, Freddy Kempf.

A ‘first’ for the theatres this year is a concert at the Queen’s Theatre, being performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales that will also be recorded by the BBC.

The season continues to maintain its reputation for providing the region with superior classical music. This new series, which runs from September 2007 to April 2008 includes 6 concerts providing a variety of top class performers and a wide range of classical music.

One of the nation’s finest classical musicians, Julian Lloyd Webber opens the series on Saturday September 15th. Widely regarded as one of the most creative musicians of his generation, Julian Lloyd Webber’s many outstanding recordings include the Brit-Award winning Elgar’s Cello Concerto conducted by Yehudi Menuhin. He will be joined by pianist Pam Chowhan to present a programme of the finest works for cello and piano.

The Queen’s Theatre have presented some excellent orchestras in the past and this year the BBC National Orchestra of Wale’s performance on Saturday 3rd November will be recorded by the BBC, a ‘first’ for the Queen’s. This orchestra occupies a very special role as it is both a national and broadcasting orchestra and tours internationally. Rising star, Matthew Trusler joins the orchestra under its principal conductor, Takuo Yuasa, to play Brahm’s great violin Concerto, one of the most challenging works in the solo violin repertoire. Other works include Mendelssohn’s romantic Scottish Symphony and Mozart’s bubbling ‘Cosi fan tutte’ Overture.

BBC Young Musician of the Year, Mark Simpson plays Mozart’s masterpiece for clarinet and strings with the Carducci Quartet on Friday 30th November. Prize winners of both the Khumo and Bordeaux Quartet competitions, the quartet is recognised today as one of Europe's top young string ensembles.

Following the Philharmonia’s sell-out performance in 2006, principal players from the orchestra return on Thursday 27th March 2008. Widely recognised to be one of the world’s greatest orchestras, the Philharmonia’s unparalleled international reputation continues to attract the cream of Europe’s talented players to its ranks, from which the Soloists of the Philharmonia Orchestra are derived. They will be joined by Tom Poster, one of Britain’s most exciting young pianists to play Schubert’s joyous ‘Trout’ Quintet.

The Queen’s Theatre welcomes back their resident orchestra Sinfonia Classica when they will be joined on Thursday 14th February by the internationally renowned pianist Freddy Kempf to play Mozart’s ‘Jeunhomme’ Piano Concerto. They will then finish the season with a spectacular choral and orchestral concert on Thursday 24th April. Joining them will be celebrated trumpeter Alison Balsom and the highly talented vocal ensemble, Armonico Consort, directed by Christopher Monks.

As part of the North Devon Theatre’s classical music development programme, to encourage young people to appreciate a variety of music disciplines, all the concerts are offered to young people (under 16) at £5.00. -- www.northdevontheatres.org.uk
