Propeller, the country's only all-male Shakespeare company, return to Liverpool with an exciting new production of The Taming of The Shrew. Previously performed at the RSC as part of The Complete Works Festival, The Taming of The Shrew arrives at the Playhouse as part of an international tour.
Propeller were last seen at the Playhouse in May 2005 with their visually striking and beautifully spoken production of The Winter's Tale. The Taming of The Shrew retains the style of that production and adds a musical backdrop to the play as the company of twelve actors perform music from Bach to Blues live on stage. A fast-moving modern production (no cod-pieces), with costumes influenced by the fashions of the 1970s and 1980s, this show will appeal to regular Shakespeare attenders and to new audiences.
Often seen as a sexist work the director Edward Hall said: "I don't think it's a sexist play at all. It is a very sophisticated comedy which is an ironic comment on how men treat women in marriage. It is up to us to decide what we think the rights and wrongs of his story is, and that's why the play is argued about so ferociously, because it is particularly brilliant in that it deals with the one issue that everyone has first hand experience of - and that is relationships."Â
Edward Hall is an Associate Artistic Director of The Watermill. His previous work with designer Michael Pavelka and Propeller include, Henry V, The Comedy of Errors, Twelfth Night, Rose Rage, A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Winter's Tale.
