Dentists warn drug use causes oral problems

Dentists have warned that increasingly prevalent drug use by young Australians is causing them dental problems. A report from the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre suggests that 12 per cent of 24-year-olds have used amphetamines in the past year.

Dental Association South Australian president, Dr Mark Hutton, says taking drugs such as methamphetamines and ice can have a devastating effect.

"They tend to reduce the amount of saliva someone produces and saliva is very important to prevent tooth decay," he said.

"Secondly they cause people to grind their teeth and, of course, gnashing or grinding tends to wear them away or break bits off." © 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
