Health Sector Reforms: Sustaining The Reforms Beyond 2007

Stakeholders in the health sector from all parts of Nigeria and abroad gathered in Abuja the capital city of Nigeria to deliberate on the health issues affecting Nigeria.

The theme of the conference was "Health in Nigeria in the 21st Century: Sustaining the Reforms Beyond 2007". The conference attracted all those that mattered in the Nigerian health sector. They include over 420 participants. The Presidency, National Assembly, State and Local Government, Federal Ministry of Health and policy makers were all represented.

The goal of the conference was to develop a health agenda for Nigeria in the twenty-first century. While declaring the conference open, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, represented by the Secretary to the Federal Republic of Nigeria ,Obong Ufot Ekaete explained that the Nigerian government over the last five years had initiated a number of policies and initiatives to reform the health sector.

"In addition, we have instituted broad reforms in various sectors of the national economy in order to ensure equity, effectiveness, efficiency and freedom of choice. We aim to accomplish improved levels of health status, reasonable costs of health services and materials, innovation in technologies and practices for health, Obasanjo emphasized".

Several papers were delivered from health practioners and scholars. Other participants at the conference includes the World Health Organization, UNICEF, DFID among others.
