Alcohol consumption linked to bowel cancer

A major study has found new evidence which links alcohol consumption with bowel cancer. The findings from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) suggest that people who drink one or two glasses of wine or beer a day increase their risk of developing the disease by about 10 per cent.

Dr Kat Arney of Cancer Research UK, one of the groups helping to fund the study, says the results are important.

"It's involving more than half a million people, so the data we're getting out of it is quite significant," she said.

"They've got around 18,000 people who develop bowel cancer and that allows you to do really quite powerful statistics to find out the links between causes of cancer and how much they might increase your risk." © 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
