Brooklyn Museum’s Target First Saturday Goes Caribbean

The Brooklyn Museum’s Target First Saturdays event attracts thousands of visitors to free programs of art and entertainment each month. On August 4, celebrate Caribbean culture with a hot line-up of live music, dance performances, films, art-making, and a dance party.

The West Indian–American Day Carnival Association kicks things off with live steel pan music, stilt walkers, Carnival costumes, and more on the Museum’s outdoor plaza from 3 to 7 p.m. At 6 p.m., the Charles Moore Dance Theater performs traditional Caribbean dance. From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. groove to the reggae beats of the Brooklyn-based band ReggaeLution or decorate a fabric sash inspired by the Museum’s renowned African galleries. At 7 p.m. see the film In the Time of the Butterflies (Mariano Barroso, 2001, 95 min., PG-13), based on a true story of courage and sisterhood that took place in the Dominican Republic during the Trujillo dictatorship.

At 7:30 p.m. Yasmin Ramirez, Arts Fellow at the Center for Puerto Rican Studies, gives a talk on artists from Caribbean communities in New York. At 8:30 p.m., the film When the Spirits Dance Mambo (Marta Moreno Vega, 2003, 91 min., NR) explores the traditional spiritual practices of Cuba. The director will introduce the film and host a question-and-answer session afterwards. And from 9 to 11 p.m., DJ Lumumba, a.k.a. Revolution, hosts a pan-Caribbean dance party featuring salsa, soca, reggae, zouk, calypso, and bachata music.

Throughout the evening, a cash bar will offer beer and wine, and the Museum Café will serve a wide variety of sandwiches, salads, and beverages. The Museum Shop will remain open until 11 p.m.
