UK PM sees bright future for north-east youngsters

Tony Blair opened Darlington College's new £35m learning centre as he made a pre-Christmas visit to County Durham.

Students and staff joined the PM as he performed the honours at the official unveiling.

In the construction department he was given a demonstration of the pioneering work being done with students.

Moving on to the hi-tech media design centre, Mr Blair was interviewed in the purpose-built television studios by journalism students Alison Goulding and Danielle Beeton.

His visit then took him into industry standard kitchens where he was given a cookery demonstration and presented with a home-made Christmas pudding.

Before unveiling a glass wall-mounted plaque, Mr Blair described the facilities as "magnificent" and "brilliantly designed".

He added:

"It's not just about a wonderful new building, it's also about what goes on inside the building, the standard and quality of the teaching and whether people get a real sense that they are part of the future when they come into a building like this."

Later, the PM officially opened the Wingate Sure Start children's centre where he read to The Night Before Christmas to children and saw a Nativity play.
