Visitors to the Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery's current exhibition The Art of Preston Jackson have offered unanimous praise for the bronze sculpture and paintings by the Peoria, Illinois artist.
In July over 1,200 visitors from fifteen states as well as Egypt, Italy, Japan and Sweden marveled at the cast bronze sculptures that tell compelling stories about the historical personalities from before, during and after the Civil War. The Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery is pleased to announce this exhibition has been extended an additional week, through Friday, August 10, 2007.
The exhibition provides a selection of Preston Jackson's bronze sculptures ranging in size from eighteen inches to five feet tall. Included are examples of the figurative work from his ongoing "Fresh from Julieanne's Garden" series based on Jackson family lore and historical research. Also included is a representative grouping of his earlier, more abstract sculptures and examples of his painting.
Preston Jackson—an African-American artist who splits his time teaching in Peoria and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago—has also completed numerous large-scale sculptures for public spaces throughout the state.
At the conclusion of the Preston Jackson exhibition, the ISMLG will begin a temporary interim schedule as the staff prepares for the next exhibition. The museum will be closed August 11-19, 25-26, and September 1-3, 8-9. The galleries will be closed during installation, August 20 through September 7, but office hours will be 9:00 Am - 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, except for Labor Day, during this period. -- www.museum.state.il.us
