The Dallas Opera is privileged to announce the casting of internationally acclaimed baritone Wolfgang Brendel to sing the key role of “Baron Scarpia” in The Dallas Opera’s 2008 production of Puccini’s TOSCA. Brendel, one of the world’s most sought-after baritones, was awarded the German Order of Merit in 1995 for his service to the arts.

He has been heard in opera houses from New York’s Metropolitan Opera to Glyndebourne and Bayreuth. Mr. Brendel is particularly associated with Munich State Opera, where he became the youngest artist in the history of the company to receive the honorary title of “Kammersänger.”

He has participated in numerous televised opera performances, including broadcast presentations of Die Zauberflöte in which he sang the role of Papageno, Tannhäuser, Eugene Onegin and Arabella. Mr. Brendel has also recorded 40 CDs and DVDs over the course of his illustrious career.

Recent engagements include San Francisco Opera’s Die Fledermaus in the role of Gabriel von Eisenstein; Baron Scarpia in Tosca and Amfortas in Parsifal in Berlin; Jack Rance in La fanciulla del West in Essen; Scarpia in Tosca and Mandryka in Arabella in Munich; and the role of Altair in the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Die ägyptische Helena.

Currently, Mr. Brendel is appearing in the role of Ford in Falstaff, in a Jonathan Miller production in Tokyo.

James Morris, who was originally scheduled to sing the role of Scarpia during the 2007-2008 Season of The Dallas Opera, asked to be released in order to accept an offer to replace a colleague in Die Meistersingers von Nurnberg at the Staatsoper Berlin. Already well known in this country for his portrayal of the role of Hans Sachs at both the Metropolitan and San Francisco Operas, this will mark Mr. Morris’s first performance of the role in Europe, as well as his first collaboration with conductor Daniel Barenboim.

“Mr. Morris did not cancel his Dallas engagement,” explains Director of Artistic Administration Jonathan Pell. “He merely asked if we would consider releasing him to accept this important opportunity.

“When we learned we could acquire the services of Mr. Brendel in the role, an artist of international stature; it seemed that we could grant the request of Mr. Morris and not risk compromising our 2008 season finale in any way.”

Puccini’s turn-of-the-century masterpiece, TOSCA, which will mark Wolfgang Brendel’s Dallas Opera debut, will be performed in the Music Hall at Fair Park on March 7, 12 and 15, 2008 at 7:30 pm and in a Sunday matinee on March 9, 2008 at 2:00 pm. -- www.dallasopera.org
