Gold for Schaefer at World University Games

German swimmer Janne Schaefer became the first University of Bath-based athlete to medal at the World University Games when she struck gold in the 50m breaststroke final on Thursday.

The 26-year-old won the title in Bangkok by more than half a second to add gold to the bronze she won in the same event at the last World University Games in Izmir, Turkey, two years ago.

Janne (pictured) touched in 30.99 seconds with Australia’s Sarah Katsoulis coming second in 31.51 seconds. Janne has just graduated with a degree in Psychology at the University of Bath and is about to begin a Management course.

On the track, Sports Performance student Ryan Scott just missed out on a medal in the 4×100m relay final. Ryan ran a leg for the GB quartet that finished fourth behind Thailand, South Africa and China. GB clocked 39.31 seconds to finish one hundredth of a second behind China, who took bronze.

Badminton players Rachel Howard (Psychology graduate), Coach Education & Sports Development graduate Heather Olver (pictured right), Matt Hanson (Masters in Education student) and Harry Wright (Sports Performance student) all saw action as GB beat Uganda 5-0 in their opening match in the pool phase.

TeamBath FC player Matt Townley, a Sport and Exercise Science graduate, has played in both of GB’s opening football matches, providing the pass from which Jan Klukowski (Central Connecticut State University, USA) equalised in their 1-1 draw with Mexico, and then playing in the 4-1 win over Morocco.

But University of Bath Sports Performance student Katherine Baker and her partner Hannah Grady lost their opening round women’s doubles match to number six seeded Yoo Mi and Lee Jin-a (KOR) 6-3, 7-6 (5).
