The state Department of Health issued a boil water advisory Thursday for residents served by the town of Springdale’s public water system after E. coli bacteria was confirmed in the water during routine testing.

The community is 40 miles from Spokane and 20 miles from Deer Park. The water system serves about 260 people.

The agency’s Office of Drinking Water is working closely with the water system operator to find the source of contamination and fix the problem. Northeast Tri-County Health has not received reports of illnesses related to the community’s drinking water.

The boil water advisory includes several precautionary steps that customers should take. These include using boiled water or bottled water for drinking, brushing teeth, dishwashing, preparing food and making ice. Water should be boiled for 3-5 minutes, then allowed to cool before using.

"We’re pleased at how well the water system operator has responded and believe he is taking the appropriate action to protect public health," said Scott Torpie, manager of the Office of Drinking Water’s eastern regional office in Spokane.

The advisory will remain in effect until the water system and the agency are confident there is no longer a threat to the system’s customers.-Department of Health
