From Tuesday 14 August – Friday 24 August five members of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra will be on tour in the Pilbara and Kimberley to conduct music workshops with primary and secondary school children in Broome, Port Hedland, Dampier, Karratha and Roebourne.
This is the fourth trip the musicians will have made to the area and hope to reach over 2200 children. This education project explores the capacity that the WASO has to contribute musically to the lives of all members of the wider community beyond the concert platform. BP Australia’s support has enabled WASO to reach remote areas of WA which have limited access to music education.
The purpose of the visit is to stimulate student interest in classical music and orchestral instruments. Each of the five WASO players will demonstrate their instrument and talk about their life as a musician. Students will have the opportunity to listen, to observe and to try one or more of the instruments. The project is beneficial to both students and teachers by complementing existing education programs. Class activities are provided by workshop presenter, Sue Noonan to reinforce what the students have learned and experienced.
Chief Executive Officer of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Keith Venning said, “The WASO 5 is a project that aims to broaden ideas about the creative process for students and teachers in a way that we hope inspires them in future music learning.”
The tour will reach a number of schools in the Pilbara and Kimberley. The dates of the WASO 5 Tour:
