New Brunswick’s State Theatre presents The Beach Boys, live in concert on Thursday, August 16 at 8pm. They will be performing such classic hits as “Surfin’ USA,” “Kokomo,” “Help Me Rhonda,” “I Get Around,” “California Girls,” as well as songs off their new album, The Warmth of the Sun. The Beach Boys include Mike Love, Bruce Johnston, John Cowsill, Tim Bonhomme, Chris Farmer, Mike Kowalski, Randell Kirsch, and Scott Totten.
For four decades, The Beach Boys—originally comprised of the three Wilson brothers: Brian, Carl, and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love, and Hawthorne, California neighbor Al Jardine—have recorded and performed the music that has become the world’s favorite soundtrack to summer. The phenomenal popularity of The Beach Boys is unique to the music industry, as their audience ranges in age from six to 60. With mega-hits like “Surfin’ Safari,” “In My Room,” and “Don’t Worry Baby,” The Beach Boys are Rock & Roll Hall of Fame legends.
Mike Love
Mike Love, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is lead singer and a founding member of The Beach Boys. Love wrote the lyrics to The Beach Boys’ first song, “Surfin’,” released in 1961. He then co-authored 11 Top 10 singles in five years with cousin Brian Wilson, a string of hits including “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “I Get Around,” “Help Me Rhonda,” “California Girls,” and “Good Vibrations.” In 2006, Love has recently completed work on his long awaited solo album.
Bruce Johnson
It was April of 1965 when Bruce Johnston initially replaced Glen Campbell (who was filling in for Brian Wilson on the road) as a “temporary” Beach Boy. Almost immediately, Johnston completed his first recording with the band—“California Girls.” In his first year, Johnston recorded three Beach Boys albums between April of 1965 and May of 1966: Summer Days, Summer Nights; The Beach Boys Party; and Pet Sounds. Johnston’s amiable style and reputation as a musician’s musician landed him in many interesting situations i.e., introducing Lennon and McCartney to Pet Sounds in London.
Hailed as “the next Neil Diamond” by ABC News Now, rock singer/songwriter Ryan Star—a former contestant of the CBS reality show Rock Star: Supernova—opens for the The Beach Boys at New Brunswick’s State Theatre, August 16, 2007 at 8pm. Tickets range from $35-75.
Long Island native Ryan Star has been entertaining audiences since the age of 14, when he formed his first band. The multi-talented Star—a singer/songwriter who plays both piano and guitar—gained mainstream attention as a fan favorite on the CBS reality show Rock Star: Supernova, in which contestants competed to become the lead singer for former Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee’s new band, Supernova. Star has garnered much praise from crowds and critics alike: rock reviewers have applauded Star for his passionate stage performances, smart lyrics, and musical versatility. A “Featured Artist” on Myspace with several popular cover songs available through iTunes, Star is rapidly gaining a reputation as an up-and-coming artist with enormous talent. -- www.statetheatrenj.org
