Exploratorium is a cool place to visit in the season of Halloween.
An old saying, perhaps meant to provide comfort, goes, "There's nothing there in the dark that isn't there in the light." At the Exploratorium's legendary Tactile Dome, however, there's never any light, and visitors are never quite sure what's there as they feel their way through twisting passageways, chutes and rooms, guided only by their sense of touch.
Since 1971, the Tactile Dome has been drawing visitors for an experience that in 1970s-speak has been described as "transcendent." Designed by August Coppola (father of actor Nicolas Cage and brother of director Francis Ford Coppola), the exhibit challenges visitors to negotiate its 13-chambered, pitch-black interior filled with textures and objects that at times seem familiar, but for which a definitive understanding is always just out of reach.
$17 covers admission to the Tactile Dome and the Exploratorium. Reservations are available by calling (415) 561-0362, Monday through Friday, between 10am and 5pm. Reservations are for 1 hour and 15 minute sessions; private rentals are limited to a minimum of 15 or a maximum of 20 participants. Tactile Dome hours extend to 6:45pm on Friday and Saturday. -- www.exploratorium.edu
