Tehran Releases Iranian-American Academic on Bail

Iran has released on bail an Iranian-American academic who has been held in Tehran since May on security charges.

Iranian judiciary sources Tuesday said the investigation into Haleh Esfandiari is complete, and she was released after a bail payment of around $320,000 was made.

Her husband Shaul Bakhash told Voice of America that he is delighted by her release.

The sources did not say anything about Kian Tajbakhsh, an Iranian-American urban planner who was detained along with Esfandiari.

Iran charged the two Iranian-Americans with conspiring against the government. Washington has denied that they are involved in spying, and has expressed outrage at what it called the mistreatment of the prisoners.

Esfandiari is a Middle East expert for a Washington, D.C. research institute. She said she was trying to create a network for making changes in Iran's system to improve democracy and the rights of women.
