Michigan State University’s Alumni Association Evening College courses this fall semester reflect celebrations of the university’s Year of Arts and Culture activities in Michigan.

Courses offered this semester include “Art History: Medieval Art of the Book – Illuminated Manuscripts,” “Arts and Crafts Movement in England and America,” “Istanbul: Treasure of Turkey” and the “Glory of Rome: Art and Architecture of the Eternal City.”

Courses on treasures found at MSU or in home attics, and treasures created by individuals working on hand quilts, holiday crafts and the culinary arts also are among this semester’s offerings.

This year’s “Backstage at Breslin” will feature Cirque de Soleil’s “Saltimbanco” show that will take participants to an imaginary city where diversity is a cause for hope. Course participants will join Breslin Center staff backstage and view the set up and preparation for the show as well as visit with some of the show’s cast members.

For individuals interested in their Scandinavian heritage, the course “The Norsemen: Explorers, Colonists and Vikings” will examine the accomplishments and lifestyles of the Norsemen, the diversity of their many settlements and sagas written by and about them. Courses on genealogy studies and genealogy research seminars also are available.

Several courses will be offered at Evening College in Grand Rapids at the Kent County Extension Building.

Registration for Evening College courses continues throughout the semester. Courses begin Monday, Sept. 24. For information on all of the Evening College courses and the online and community programs, visit the Web at www.msualum.com/evecoll.-Michigan State University
